However, it was only in the mid 1700s that they were colonized by the Western world, under the administration of the Danish East India Company.

Due to problems with malaria outbreaks, however, the islands were abandoned from time to time by the colonizers and by 1848, they were left for good.

It was not till 1868, however, when the Danish government formally gave up its claims to The Nicobar Islands. At this point in time, they sold their rights to the islands to Britain, making The Nicobar Islands part of British India.

From 1942 to 1945, the Japanese occupied the islands.

Five years later, in 1950, the Union Territory was formed to include the Andaman Islands.

In some parts of the islands, men and women never dance together although in other parts, this practice is not followed.

The Nicobari are not isolated from the rest of the world and as such has been influenced by outside music and art as well.

In fact, three islands in the area have been declared as wildlife sanctuaries.

The islands are home to a wide diversity of birds and fowl. They also have reptiles such as Pythons and crocodiles. However, it is the marine life that is most abundant.

The ecosystem in The Nicobar Islands is quite delicate, however. This factor is even more important since the tsunami hit in December of 2004. Considerable damage to the environment occurred and until now, studies are still being conducted regarding this.
